Introduction to Founding
"If we are to know where we are going, we should know where we began."
- Charles Van Riper, ASHA Leader, November 1981
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association was founded in December 1925 as an organization called the American Academy of Speech Correction. The name was subsequently changed in 1927 to the American Society for the Study of Disorders of Speech, in 1934 to the American Speech Correction Association, in 1947 to the American Speech and Hearing Association, and in 1978 it assumed its present name.
